Description
Photos from the RISE Festival on the Jean Dry Lake Bed in the Mojave Desert of Nevada, where 20,000 paper lanterns were released, sending hand written dreams, wishes and prayers ups to the heavens on paper lanterns floating like hot air balloons on the heat of fire. The event was created to honor a traditional event in northern Thailand called Yi Peng or Full Moon Day I the second lunar month according to the Thai Lanna lunar calendar). The sky lanterns or floating lanterns made of rice paper resemble jellyfish. People “make merit” (them bun). It is often celebrated in Chiang Mai at the same time as Loi Krathing in which lights float in the water.
